By A. Shaw Contents and Outline The religions claim that religion and belief in ‘god’ is good. It may be used, they say, by bad people for bad purposes but intrinsically belief in god and the practice of religion is a good thing because it makes people ‘better’! They also claim that under its influence the world will be more peaceful and harmonious. The evidence does not support that proposition. In every area of life Churches and religions claim the moral high ground, yet close examination shows that their influence has not been a progressive force, but has retarded human progress, caused or aggravated violence and conflict, and over a range of issues its influence has been malign, and not benign as its advocates claim. Centuries of suppression of atheist opinion and opposition to religion have allowed the myth of the goodness of religion to go unchallenged and still, today, there are few outlets for principled opposition to religion. This book could be constructed in such a way as to look at each aspect in historical terms, or by era. I have chosen the former. The dominant theme of all these booklets is criticism and opposition political, organised religion, and the continuing suppression of atheist, secularist and secular humanist views throughout UK education and national media. In 'A Theory of Belief' I outline what I believe to be the process that causes intelligent, educated, and otherwise rational people to continue to believe in superstitions, the most widespread of which is religion. *Available in Print (see Below)
